![]() I'd certainly recommend it over an LG, but I've got fairly limited experience with these players having only owned two. ![]() I'm still not impressed with Blu-Ray to the extent the promoters of "what's hot" seem to insist I should be, but at least the Sony hasn't been a problem. It's also a slow loader but, so far, plays all the Blu-Ray disks Netflix has sent. I used my Square Trade warranty and junked it and bought the Sony. But what I found is that every two months or so I had to get some kind of up-grade or it wouldn't play some of the Netflix movies I'd rented. Previously I'd owned an LG Blu-Ray 100 player which had high ratings. What I really want is a good quality viewing experience and a good movie to go along with it. A clear picture is a clear picture and I could care less about all the bells and whistles found on a Blu-Ray disk. standard DVD players, except that Blu-Ray players take longer to load disks. I was on a budget and Best Buy's price was just too high for what we were looking to spend.įrankly, I've not found a huge difference in the Blu-Ray players vs. I had to do it all over again, I would buy this same unit due to the great value I got for the money. Once again, eBay's reseller gets the business for being more competitive. I saw a similar unit in Best Buy, but as usual, I found it on eBay for a much better price. I went to Sony's site, downloaded the ISO file, burned it to a regular CD-ROM, loaded it in the BDP-S301 player and in about 20 minutes or so, the firmware was upgraded to the latest version. If Upgrading the firmware was pretty painless. This unit does not play native DiVX movies. Even movies converted from DiVX to DVD format look spectacular. All of the audio is so distinct on each channel, just as it is on DTS movies. The sound quality on the Blu Ray discs are absolutely incredible. What was so unexpected is that not only is the Blu Ray picture quality incredible on my Sony SRDX 1080p TV, but also regular DVD movies look incredible compared to the old DVD player I was using. I expected the Blu Ray picture to be excellent. I would have rated it as excellent, but the load time for the Blu Ray discs take well over a minute just as other people have complained. I cannot fairly evaluate the units capability in that field without more testing. Blu-Ray is in a world, all it's own, with very limited applications available at this time. ![]() In addition, it does a great job with DVD's. It plays CD's very well, and you get full Dolby processing of them. If you are going to hook it directly to your TV, via HDMI, it will work like a charm and, if your A/V Receiver has HDMI ports, it will work perfectly in that arena also. Why can't this unit do the same?Īll-in-all, I consider the BDP300 a good unit for most applications. I also have a SONY DVD Recorder, which DOES provide progressive scan recording AND playback, via the component video route. Frankly, I consider this a SONY, in both their DA1000ES receiver, and in the BDP-300 unit. My A/V receiver, which is a Sony model DA1000 unit does NOT have HDMI inputs! Therefore, I am forced to either direct-connect the video from the BDP-300 to my Hitachi 52" flat screen, and connect the audio via optical cable to my A/V amplifier OR, live without Progressive Scan. You cannot get HD via the S-Video route at all. It also has a component video output, and standard left-right audio connectors and S-VIDEO connector. The S301 has a built-in Dolby Decoder, and can output the 5 signals separately, via RCA plugs. You will also need a TOSVIDEO (Optical) cable, if you really want to get the full, surround sound, DOLBY experience from this machine OR, a dolby equipped A/V amplifier with separate inputs for each set of speakers. ![]() You CAN get 1080 in the interlaced mode, using component video hookup. To get 1080 in progressive scan mode, you will have to purchase a HDMI cable. This will permit you to connect the unit to either your TV or to your A/V Amplifier however, it will NOT permit you to connect it to use it in HD mode or, to obtain the built-in Dolby audio functions. Included with the unit are a power cord, and three RCA equipped cables. It comes with a great Sony multipurpose remote control, which can be programmed to control most of your other Home Theater equipment. It does a beautiful job of playing all media and, has the ability to "boost" your SD items up to High Def. It is small enough to fit comfortably within most Home Theater cabinets, and is light enough to move around easily. NOTE that these comments are also applicable to the BDP-S300 machine as well. This is a great CD/DVD/BLU RAY player and, it comes at a very reasonable price.
